Hi Everyone,
I am excited to announce that I have renamed this blog from “richardchu97” to “The Innovation Codex”.
My Goal with this Blog
I originally started this blog to share occasional thoughts on investing and do write-ups on under-the-radar growth stocks. I decided against doing a paid newsletter as I was already working full-time at a fund.
However, writing and investing have always been two of my biggest passions, and past articles I’ve written have caught the attention of other talented investors, management teams, and industry experts.
Since I never approached building a blog in a methodical way, I did not have a consistent content schedule or focus area.
That is changing with The Innovation Codex. Although I will still be posting my write-ups for free, with a paid option to support the blog if you’d like, my focus will be exclusively on covering innovation.
My goal behind this blog is simple: I hope to connect with like-minded people of all backgrounds, whether that be founders, operators, industry experts, investment professionals, or simply passionate retail investors.
With over 5 years of experience in professional investing and tech, I believe that I’ve developed some unique perspectives and hopefully we can add value to each other. I especially welcome constructive criticism – I am here to learn.
What Will I Write About?
You can expect bi-monthly posts on the following, with a focus on tech and healthcare:
Industry Deep Dives
Company Deep Dives
Profiles on Tech and Investing Leaders
Investment Philosophy Discussions
I aim to prioritize quality over quantity. I’ll only send out a post when I have something thoughtful to share so you won’t find your inbox overwhelmed.
I will be posting my first article this week which will include a few life lessons I’ve learned from my investing journey thus far, followed by a primer on the US healthcare industry that I’ve been working on for a while.
If you find my work compelling, I’d love to connect on LinkedIn and chat about anything related to investing, healthcare, and tech.
About Me
I am a 27-year-old based in Toronto, Canada. I started my investing journey six years ago and quickly developed an affinity for the tech sector. After graduating with a Bachelor’s in Commerce, I worked for a year in tech consulting. However, I found the role was too technical as I was in the weeds configuring software for clients.
During this time, I spent all my free time learning about companies and investing in my personal account, and I decided to start writing and sharing my theses publicly and was able to scale my Substack to nearly 6K subscribers.
Soon, the portfolio manager at a US-based long-only public equities fund came across my research, and I impressed him enough to be offered an investment analyst position.
I spent the next four years on the buy side at both the US public equities fund and later at a Toronto-based family office, where I got exposure to different strategies and asset classes, including some lower-middle-market private equity deals.
During this time, I continued to invest actively in the public markets in my personal account, and shared some of my learnings and notes through this Substack. It has been a very volatile ride but I’ve been able to beat the market by a large margin thus far and I’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way about investing and life in general.
In my free time, besides investing and writing, I enjoy reading about topics as wide-ranging as history, geopolitics, psychology, and spirituality. I am also an avid traveler and have been to 35 countries, largely solo.
The driving force behind how I spend my time - whether investing, reading, traveling, or writing this blog - is my intellectual curiosity and my passion for discovering unique perspectives that challenge and expand my worldview.
Thanks for reading,
Richard
